Zanzibar travel guide
Everything we tell clients before we start planning Zanzibar: how the coasts differ, how the tides shape your days, when to go and how long to stay.

Understanding the island
Spice-island slowness: turquoise shallows, dhow sails at dusk and a Stone Town of carved doors and coral-stone alleys.
Zanzibar is compact but slow to cross — an airport transfer to the north or east can take up to two hours. That's why we usually recommend one beach base plus, at most, one move.
Choosing your coast
North — Nungwi & Kendwa
Swims at any tide, best sunsets, walkable restaurants and the liveliest evenings.
East coast
Long wide beaches, strong tides, kitesurfing, excellent villa value.
South-east
The quietest beaches on the island. Tidal, but the privacy is unmatched.
Stone Town
Carved doors, coral-stone alleys, rooftop sundowners. One or two nights, not a week.
When to go
Season drives both weather and price in Zanzibar.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Peak | Dec – Feb · Jul – Aug | Dry, bright, best diving visibility. |
| Shoulder | Mar · Jun · Sep – Nov | Warm and quiet, excellent villa value. |
| Low | Apr – May | Long rains — lowest rates, some closures. |
How long to stay
- 5 nights — one coast plus a reef day and a Stone Town afternoon.
- 7 nights — the sweet spot for most travellers.
- 10 nights — two coasts, or the island half of a mainland safari trip.
What to build your days around

Harvest walk followed by a Swahili tasting menu.

Planning notes from our side
- Book December–February and July–August three to six months out.
- Check the tide table before promising yourself a sandbank lunch — we plan those against the tides.
- Private transfers are worth the money here; the airport runs are long.
- April and May are the long rains: lowest prices, some closures.
