Island comparison

Zanzibar vs Mauritius for a luxury holiday

We plan both islands, so we have no reason to sell you one over the other. The honest summary: Zanzibar is more barefoot and remote, Mauritius is more polished and more varied.

Choose Zanzibar if…

  • You want beaches that feel remote and barefoot.
  • You like history and culture within reach of the sand — Stone Town has no equivalent in Mauritius.
  • You're pairing the island with a mainland safari.
  • Snorkelling and dhow sailing matter more than polish.

Choose Mauritius if…

  • You want calm, reef-protected lagoons and reliable swimming.
  • You want more than the beach: mountains, waterfalls, hikes, tea country and a serious food scene.
  • You value easy logistics and short drives.
  • You want a wider spread of high-end resorts and private villas.

Honeymoons

Both work. Zanzibar honeymoons lean private-villa, dhow sunset and sandbank dinner; Mauritius honeymoons lean lagoon villa, private catamaran day and chef nights. If it's your first long-haul trip together and you want everything to run smoothly, Mauritius is the safer choice. If you want the sense of being somewhere far away, Zanzibar.

Seasons compared

Both islands share a broadly similar pattern — hot summer from November to February, cooler and drier mid-year — but Zanzibar's April–May long rains are the sharpest low point of either island. Mauritius's May–July window is cooler and breezier rather than wet, which makes it excellent value.

Can you do both?

Yes. On twelve nights or more we plan a two-island trip, usually Mauritius first and Zanzibar second. Mention it in your request comment and we'll cost both legs together.

Frequently asked questions
