Zanzibar timing

Best time to visit Zanzibar

Zanzibar has two dry windows, two rainy ones and a clear value season in between. Here's how we pick dates for clients.

Last reviewed 6 September 2026

The short answer

June to October and December to February are the safest weather. June, September and October are the value sweet spot: dry enough, warm, quieter beaches and better villa rates. Avoid April and May, the long rains.

Season by season

SeasonMonthsWhat to expect
PeakDec – Feb · Jul – AugDry, bright, best diving visibility.
ShoulderMar · Jun · Sep – NovWarm and quiet, excellent villa value.
LowApr – MayLong rains — lowest rates, some closures.

Month by month

  • January–February — hot, bright, excellent diving. Peak pricing.
  • March — warm and humid with building showers; good value early in the month.
  • April–May — the long rains. Lowest rates, some properties close.
  • June — the rains clear; one of our favourite months.
  • July–August — dry, breezier, peak European holiday demand.
  • September–October — dry, warm, quiet. Best all-round value.
  • November — short rains, usually brief afternoon showers.
  • December — hot and festive; Christmas and New Year book out early.

Timing your trip around the tide

The east and south-east coasts have big tidal swings, so swimming is time-dependent. If a sandbank lunch or a specific dive is a priority, we schedule it against the tide table for your dates. The north coast swims at any tide.

Booking lead times

  • Peak (Dec–Feb, Jul–Aug): three to six months.
  • Shoulder (Jun, Sep–Nov, Mar): six to eight weeks is often enough.
  • Specific private-pool villas: earlier, whatever the season.

Frequently asked questions

April, followed by May — the long rains. November brings shorter afternoon showers.
