Trou aux Biches lagoon and boats from above, Mauritius

Mauritius guide

Mauritius travel guide

We live in Mauritius, so this is the version we'd give a friend: which coast for which month, what's worth leaving the resort for, and how long the island really needs.

Understanding the island

Our home turf. Lagoon villas, mountain trails and private catamaran days — plus the local access that only living here unlocks.

Mauritius is small enough to cross in about 90 minutes, so one base can cover a lot. Wind and swell vary by coast and season, which matters more than distance when choosing where to stay.

Choosing your coast

North — Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches

Calm swimming, restaurants, marina life. The easiest first visit.

West — Tamarin, Black River

Dolphins, sunsets, mountains, a more local feel.

South-west — Le Morne

The most dramatic scenery and the kitesurfing coast.

East — Belle Mare

Wide lagoons, big estate resorts, breezier and quieter.

When to go

SeasonMonthsWhat to expect
PeakNov – FebHot summer, lagoon at its warmest.
ShoulderMar – Apr · Aug – OctPerfect balance — our own favourite window.
LowMay – JulCooler, breezier, best villa value.

How long to stay

  • 5 nights — one coast, a catamaran day, one inland trip.
  • 7 nights — our recommendation for a first visit.
  • 10+ nights — two coasts, or Mauritius with a Zanzibar leg.

Not if your package includes transfers or a chauffeur. Driving is on the left and the roads are decent, but most of our guests prefer being driven for the excursion days.
