Zanzibar trip length
How many days do you need in Zanzibar?
Five nights is the realistic minimum, seven is what we recommend most often, and ten opens up two coasts or a safari pairing. The transfer times are what drive that answer.

The short answer
Seven nights. It gives you five full beach days after arrival and departure days, room for a reef trip and a spice-farm afternoon, and one Stone Town night without feeling rushed.
What each length gives you
5 nights
One coast, one reef day, one Stone Town afternoon. Works, but you'll feel the travel days.
7 nights
Beach base, Mnemba snorkel, spice farm and chef's table, one Stone Town night.
10 nights
Two coasts with a private transfer between, or Zanzibar after a mainland safari.
14 nights
Zanzibar plus Mauritius, or a genuinely slow single-villa stay.
Why transfers matter
The airport is in the south-west, and a transfer to the north or east coast can take up to two hours. That's most of a day gone on arrival and departure, which is why short Zanzibar trips feel shorter than they look on paper. We keep moves to a minimum and use private transfers.
A 7-night shape we use often
- Day 1 — arrive, private transfer, settle in.
- Day 2 — beach and lagoon day.
- Day 3 — Mnemba Atoll snorkel, early start.
- Day 4 — spice farm walk and Swahili chef's table.
- Day 5 — free beach day or a sandbank lunch, tide permitting.
- Day 6 — transfer to Stone Town, historian-led walk, rooftop sundowner.
- Day 7 — Stone Town morning, then depart.
Frequently asked questions
Not really. With two long transfer days you'd have barely one full beach day. If three nights is all you have, stay on the north coast to cut the transfer time.
