Cape Town timing
Best time to visit Cape Town
Summer is the obvious answer and the expensive one. The shoulder months are what we book most: warm days, quiet vineyards and far better rates.

The short answer
March–April and September–October are the best value: warm, long days without the peak-summer prices or crowds. November–February is the classic beach season and books out early. May–August is green season — dramatic, wet, and the cheapest time to stay somewhere excellent.
Season by season
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Peak | Nov – Feb | Long summer days, beach season, book early. |
| Shoulder | Mar – Apr · Sep – Oct | Best value, warm days, quiet vineyards. |
| Low | May – Aug | Green season, storm-watching, top hotel rates. |
Month by month
- January–February — hot, dry, busy; the south-easter can blow hard.
- March–April — our top pick: warm, calmer wind, harvest season in the Winelands.
- May–June — first winter rains, low prices, superb hotel value.
- July–August — wettest and coolest, but whale season begins on the Whale Coast.
- September — wildflowers and whales, weather still changeable.
- October — warming, quiet, excellent value before the summer rush.
- November–December — beach season resumes; December books out months ahead.
The wind matters more than the rain
The south-easter shapes Cape Town summers. It can close the cable car and make Atlantic beaches unpleasant while the False Bay side stays calm. We keep mountain and ocean days flexible for exactly this reason, and we always hold alternatives.
Timing the Winelands
February to April is harvest, the most atmospheric time on the estates. Winter tastings are quieter and often more generous with the winemaker's time, with fires lit in the tasting rooms.
Frequently asked questions
June to August is the wet season, with July usually the wettest.
